From the Desk of Fr. Ron…….
What makes a person famous? Do you remember Doug Flutie? He was made famous by being a star quarterback with the Buffalo Bills leading our home team to the playoffs. He even had his picture on the “Wheaties” cereal box. I guess anyone can be famous if your good at your job in a way that others are not and people take notice of you. What makes a person famous? It is often said that wealth is power. Are all rich people famous or only those who don’t let others forget that they are rich?
With fame comes a variety of human responses. A few may genuinely be glad for one’s success. Some people become jealous of another one’s success, wealth and popularity. Others filled with envy begin to plot how they can acquire another’s wealth without the trouble of earning it themselves or pray for the successful person’s downfall. As we read in this weekend’s letter of James: “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice” James 3:16.
Even the first Biblical lesson from the Book of Wisdom states: “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us” Wisdom 2:12. Jesus knows the human heart. Jesus understands while there are many who wonderfully accept Him and rejoice in His true presence others are filled with jealousy and envy. Many are plotting against Him. In the passage from the Gospel of Mark this weekend, Jesus announces for the second time: “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise” Mk 9:31. Of course Jesus’ message falls upon deaf ears because while they were on their own journey the disciples themselves were arguing about who is the most famous or the most important among them. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all” Mark 9:35. Well said Jesus, for it is truly then that others will behold your good works and give glory to God above.
Are you famous? Or has only the Lord Jesus taken notice of you? In Him we’ll all find our everlasting peace.
