From the Desk of Fr. Ron…….
When a parent has to accompany a child through a serious illness, they often pray to God that God afflict them with the illness and take it away from their child. We see this present even within the Bible as King David appeals to God to stop the punishment of his people for it was he who sinned and should be punished instead. Love of another will often lead to one’s self-sacrifice for the one that is loved.
This most human reality, the desire to sacrifice oneself for the good of others, lies behind Jesus’ sacrifice of His own Self on the Cross for each one of us. He suffered and died that we may live forever with Him in the Kingdom of God. As St. Paul in his second letter to Timothy states: “God will all to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth” 2 Tim 2:4.
It was God’s will that Mary be conceived immaculately, without the stain of original sinfulness, in order to be totally free to choose how to answer the invitation of God through the Angel Gabriel. Mary’s free choice reverses the fall into temptation and sin of Eve in the garden and begins a new chapter in our Salvation history. St. Paul continually reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. In our belief of that reality then Mary’s body as well is most perfectly that temple and logically should not have to suffer corruption which is a consequence of original sinfulness.
Our Easter Rite sisters and brothers beautifully imply that when Mary closes her human eyes in death, she opens them body and soul in the kingdom. Thus is Mary assumed into Heaven. By her Immaculate Conception she enjoys the fruit of the blessed resurrection of her son Jesus. By her Assumption she fulfills God’s will for all of us as well. Where Mary has gone, we her daughters and sons hope soon to follow.
Mary, assumed into heaven ahead of all your children, please pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our own death. Amen.
