Back Pentecost Sunday
Friday, May 29, 2020
At the end of May 2017, a small group from Nativity Parish traveled to Rome Italy for the fiftieth anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. I was able to join our group mid-trip and enjoy Pentecost weekend with them in Rome. On Thursday, before Pentecost several thousand were gathered in the Lateran Cathedral; the Cathedral Church of Rome itself. After some presentations, etc. we prepared for Mass. I was gathered with the clergy from around the whole world. There was no one sitting near me that spoke a word of English. There were rolls and rolls of Bishops and Cardinals all in red vestments, a vibrant music ministry sat across them and the nave was filled with the thousands gathered.
At the time, Holy Communion was being distributed, we priests seated behind the altar area formed a line of eight persons in depth approaching the back of the altar to self-communicate. While approaching the altar, receiving and returning to my seat the choir just finished the third communion song and the place began to shake with the song of praise. The music ministry held a tonic chord while the congregation broke into multiple languages of personal praise to our Lord. The musical sacrifice went on for a good eight minutes. The clergy surrounding me, formerly unable to speak to one another, were now united in a multi-lingual experience of praise and adoration of the Lord.
This weekend, we celebrate Pentecost when much the same experience that happened to those in the upper room. Having been strengthened by such an experience they burst into the town square proclaiming and praising God in a variety of tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The resurrected Jesus breathed upon them and sent them forth.
We pray for a renewal of God’s Holy Spirit upon our parish and upon our whole Diocese. Surely, we need it at this time of Chapter Eleven reorganization, as well as the COVID 19 pandemic. Come Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle within us the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and we will be recreated and renew the face of the earth.
