From the Desk of Fr. Ron…….
Most crime happens in the dark of night, rather than in broad daylight. This is so that the perpetrators are not recognized or caught in the act. “Darkness” and “Light” play important roles in the composition of John’s Gospel. Nicodemus, a member of the Pharisees, a ruler of the Jews, and a secret follower of Jesus came to Him while it was dark. He didn’t want to be caught consulting with Jesus. In their conversation, Jesus would tell him that “no one can see the kingdom of God without being born* again” (John 3:3). This statement puzzled Nicodemus who reasoned that one cannot return to one’s mother’s womb. His misunderstanding could be likened to the darkness of spiritual ignorance. Jesus goes on to teach about being born of water and the spirit. John’s readers would immediately be aware of the early church’s use of Baptism and the calling down of the Holy Spirit upon those wishing to follow Jesus.
All this is made possible through the power of God working in Christ Jesus, who was to be lifted up so that all who would believe in Him might not perish but share in God’s gift of eternal life. We are all faced with that choice. Do I continue to sit in the darkness of spiritual ignorance, or do I take the initiative to invite Jesus into my life? Do I invite Him to awaken my soul with the fire of His light and love? If we invite Him, He surely will come and make His home with us. Then, we not only will know about Him but known Him who we too endeavor to follow.
In the Book of Revelation, Jesus says “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20). Lent is perfect time to listen for Jesus to knock on the door of our hearts. Lent is the perfect time to open the door for Jesus to enter in. But, His friendship with us will change us into the sons and daughters that God wishes us to be. Once we experience His love and attention, we are never the same again. That is why His followers left everything to follow Him. Won’t you open the door to Jesus?
