Back The Baptism of the Lord
Sunday, January 10, 2021
From the Desk of Fr. Ron…….
One thing I learned about working and living with the African American Culture was the ability to affirm potential. A youngster who can hardly hold a tune in a school play will, at the same moment, be greeted by her family with: “sing child, sing!” That affirmative spirit continues to encourage many youth to develop their potential. Many famous and talented singers grew up with this affirmative spirit in the community of the church.
This celebration of the Baptism of the Lord is a celebration of Gods affirmation that Jesus is the long awaited “Servant of the Lord” as prophesized by Isaiah. “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased. Upon him I have put my spirit” (Isaiah 42:1). After Jesus’ Baptism by John the voice is heard from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Matthew 1:11). This affirmation gives Him the strength to move forward and fulfill His father’s will.
During this new year, may we be a voice of affirmation and strength for others. While some criticize and tear others down, let us lift them up and affirm them to their full potential. As St. Irenaeus said: “The joy of God is the human person fully alive.”
